How to Defile Your Marriage
PLEASE NOTE: I changed up the way I’m sharing information and am now on Youtube. You should definitely come check out my channel. Click the link, and I’ll see you there! (FYI - My beliefs have changed on some subjects since writing for this website.)
John 14:6: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
John 6:47: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” – Jesus
According to Jesus, there is only one way. One way to Heaven. One way to everlasting life. One way to God the Father. These are separate things, and yet they all go hand-in-hand. You either get them all as a package deal, or you go to Hell. In order to escape Hell, Jesus is the way, and what a person must do to go through that door is to believe on Jesus Christ.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the story of His death, burial, and resurrection (1st Corinthians 15:1-4). The Gospel must be believed by the sinner in order for him to be saved (Romans 1:16).
Those who have believed on Jesus Christ are saved (Romans 10:9, John 3:16). Believers are known as “the body of Christ” (1st Corinthians 12:27). Believers are known as “the church” (Ephesians 1:22-23). Believers are known as “the bride” of Jesus Christ (John 3:29, 2nd Corinthians 11:2). Pay close attention to that last one. We are about to learn a fascinating truth from the Bible. We will begin by viewing two passages of Scripture.
Ephesians 5:25-27: “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”
2nd Corinthians 11:2: “For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.”
These passages speak of the desire for believers in Jesus Christ to be presented as pure virgins, unblemished brides, prepared for a special union with Jesus. What might prevent the believer from being presented “a chaste virgin”, or an undefiled bride? You might be quick to say that sin would be the culprit. That is not correct. Let’s look again at that verse from 2nd Corinthians, paying special attention to what the apostle Paul says in the two verses directly following it.
2nd Corinthians 11:2-4: “For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.”
Paul was concerned that the undefiled virgin, the wholesome bride, would be corrupted by someone who would teach the believer of “another Jesus,” one belonging to “another gospel.” What happens when a believer becomes mixed up with “another Jesus” and “another gospel”? And who would cause such a thing? Let’s go to the book of Jude to find out.
Jude 3-4: “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Who are these men who have “crept in unawares”? They are mentioned elsewhere in Scripture.
Galatians 2:4: “And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage.”
There were “false brethren,” or fake Christians, who came in secretly and saw the liberty that true believers have in Jesus Christ. These fake Christians sought to place true believers in bondage once again. Bondage to what, you ask?
Romans 6:14: “For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.”
Sin rules over the unsaved person, because they are subject to the law, which is the Ten Commandments (Galatians 3:10-12). Believers in Jesus Christ are not under the bondage of the law (Galatians 3:13), because they are under God’s grace, which is what saves the believer’s soul (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Romans 8:14-15: “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”
A believer receives the Holy Spirit by faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:13), and this causes that person to be adopted into the family of God (John 1:12, Romans 8:17, Galatians 3:26). This means that the believer is freed from the curse of the law (Romans 7:4, Galatians 3:13), and believers are no longer under the bondage of the law but are under grace (Romans 6:15), also known as the law of faith (Romans 3:27), also known as the law of liberty (James 2:12). This is all made possible by the Gospel (Ephesians 1:13), which was made possible by Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1).
There are people who hate the doctrines that have just been shared. They are the “false brethren,” the ones who are “crept in unawares,” desiring to bring believers “into bondage.” They do this by preaching “another gospel,” which attempts to place the believer back under the rule of the law. Look at the following Scripture:
Galatians 1:6-9: “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”
The churches in Galatia had been infiltrated by “false brethren” who had been teaching the true believers there a false gospel. The true Gospel focuses on “the grace of Christ.” The false gospel overtaking the believers in Galatia was a call for faith plus keeping the law.
Galatians 3:1-3: “O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?”
The believers at Galatia had been “bewitched,” or charmed, into accepting “another gospel.”
Romans 16:17-18: “Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.”
By use of “good words” and “fair speeches,” false teachers trick people into accepting doctrines contrary to what the Bible teaches. This can be “another gospel,” featuring “another Jesus,” which the apostle Paul is quick to point out is “not another.” There is only one Gospel. Any variation of that Gospel is a lie. The true Gospel demands simple faith in Jesus Christ (1st Corinthians 15:1-4, Romans 1:16). A false gospel will ask for more than faith, such as the keeping of the law (Galatians 3:2) or the necessity of works (Ephesians 2:8-9).
1st Timothy 1:5-7: “Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned (genuine): From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling (either proud or senseless disputes); Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.”
Some departed the simple concept of faith, preferring to teach adherence to the law instead. People who do this have no understanding of what they say, according to the Bible.
Now, let’s get into the real meat of this issue! Look again at the following:
Jude 3-4: “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.”
We will need to define a certain word used in the preceding Scripture.
Lasciviousness: inclined to lustfulness; wanton; lewd (from dictionary.com)
Let’s examine two of those synonyms.
Wanton: sexually lawless or unrestrained; loose; lascivious; lewd
Lewd: inclined to, characterized by, or inciting to lust or lechery; lascivious
It is safe to say that a person who is practicing “lasciviousness” is likely to be committing “fornication.” The following is from gotquestions.org:
“In the New Testament, "fornication" comes from the Greek word porneia, which includes adultery and incest. Porneia comes from another Greek word that also includes indulging in any kind of unlawful lust, which would include homosexuality. The use of the word in the gospels and the epistles is always in reference to sexual sin, whereas "fornication" in the book of Revelation always refers to idolatry.”
That brings us to the following:
1st Corinthians 7:2: “Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.”
What did we learn earlier? Christians are identified as being the bride of Jesus Christ. Paul desired for Christians to remain pure until their wedding day with Jesus. Take another look at that particular verse:
2nd Corinthians 11:2: “For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.”
Place these two verses together, and you will get some interesting parallels. In order to avoid fornication, a man should have one wife, and a woman should have one husband. If Christians are to be the bride of Jesus Christ, that means that Jesus should be their one and only future husband. If they believe in “another Jesus,” then they are committing fornication. This also means that Jesus can only be the future husband of those who have believed on Him, or else He is committing fornication with those who have come to Him another way, outside of simple faith.
How do you defile the coming “marriage,” or the relationship between Jesus Christ and His believers? You bring in “another Jesus,” from “another gospel” (2nd Corinthians 11:4). The believer becomes a fornicator, because he has partnered up with “another Jesus.” Meanwhile, what happens to the grace of God? Look again at Jude 3-4:
“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Because “the faith” has not been contended for, or fought for, some men have turned “the grace of our God into lasciviousness.” They have turned God’s grace into something lustful and lewd, and ultimately into a fornicator. How have they done this? By partnering grace with works and/or the law. Grace, given to believers through faith, does not mix with works (Romans 4:4, Romans 3:27). Grace, given to believers through faith, does not mix with the law (Romans 3:28, Romans 4:13-14, Galatians 3:2).
Think of it like this:
Believers + Jesus Christ = a bride and a groom
A believer’s faith in Jesus Christ + God’s grace = salvation
“False brethren” (Galatians 2:4) bring in “damnable heresies” (2nd Peter 2:1), deceiving people into accepting “another Jesus” (2nd Corinthians 11:4). Here is the result:
Believers + Jesus Christ + “another Jesus” = fornication, corruption, defiled bride
A believer’s faith in Jesus Christ + God’s grace + law/works = lasciviousness, fornication, “another gospel”
Adding the law and/or works to God’s grace is like a person who is engaged having relations with another while waiting for the wedding day. Someone who is engaged may say to their partner “You are not enough for me.” Likewise, for a believer to trust in the law and/or works is equivalent to the believer saying to Jesus Christ “You are not enough for me.” One husband is not enough for this bride, and so she brings in “another Jesus.” Meanwhile, God’s grace says to the believer’s faith “You are not enough for me,” and God’s grace brings in the law and/or works in order to satisfy itself.
Jude 4 goes on to say “and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.” “False brethren” deny the one and only Jesus by preaching “another Jesus.” These fake Christians have several other nicknames, which Paul used in the same chapter of 2nd Corinthians that described the virgin bride of Christ and those who would seek to defile her.
2nd Corinthians 11:13-15: “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.”
If someone is preaching “another Jesus,” one who cannot save you without the keeping of the law and/or works, then you have been presented with “another gospel.” This is done by “deceitful workers,” also known as “the ministers of righteousness.” They claim that you must keep the law (repent of all your sins) and do good works in order to be righteous enough for salvation. Notice that their end “shall be according to their works.” Because they did not believe on Jesus Christ alone for righteousness (Romans 10:4), they have put themselves under the law and will be judged by their works (Galatians 3:10-12, Galatians 5:4, Matthew 7:21-23).
If you are not saved, then believe on Jesus Christ and be saved (John 6:47, Acts 16:30-31).
If you are already saved, don’t defile your future marriage by accepting “another Jesus.” Don’t defile God’s grace by mixing it with the law and/or works.
If you thought you were saved, but you have believed on “another Jesus,” one who belongs to “another gospel,” and who demands you to keep the law (you must not sin) and do good works (you must produce evidence for salvation), then let me introduce you to the real Jesus. He died for the sins of the entire world (1st John 2:2), and He was raised again in order to justify those who believe on Him (Romans 4:25). To save your soul, He asks only for your faith (John 6:47, 1st John 5:1,5). Jesus does not need you to do works in order to save you (Romans 4:5), and He even took the law (the Ten Commandments) to the cross with Him in order to clear the way for you (Colossians 2:14), so that your faith in Him would be sufficient to save you (Romans 5:1).
Jude 3-4 is a warning against committing fornication with a false spirit, a false gospel, and a false Jesus. All glory goes to God for revealing this great truth from His Word.
